Thermal cyclers (also known as PCR machines) are the engines of molecular biology, used to amplify DNA and RNA through precise temperature cycling.

 

  1. Types of Thermal Cyclers
  • Standard (Gradient) PCR:

Features a “gradient” function that allows different temperatures across the block. This is essential for optimizing the annealing temperature of new primers.

  • Fast PCR: Uses advanced “Peltier” elements and thin-walled tubes to complete a 40-cycle run in under 40 minutes.
  • Real-Time (qPCR): Monitors DNA amplification in real-time using fluorescent dyes. Used for quantifying viral load (like COVID-19 tests) or gene expression.
